ROTC Program - Tucson Campus
"Your Pathway to Leadership Starts Here in Tucson!"
WHAT IS ARMY ROTC
Army ROTC is a program that will enhance your education and provide you with unique leadership training and management experience. You’ll develop skills and qualities necessary to succeed in both military and civilian careers. Students enrolled in ROTC classes are called cadets. Cadets are provided valuable opportunities to build for the future by earning a college degree and a commission in the United States Army at the same time. The 4-year ROTC program is divided into two parts:
BASIC COURSE: Offered to freshman and sophomores with no military obligation. Classes are held at Pima Community College East and West Campuses, as well as the University of Arizona. The program includes leadership development, military history, basic weapons training, rappelling, time management, map reading, and land navigation. Students with prior military service or those who have completed 4 years of JROTC are typically exempt from the Basic Course.
ADVANCE COURSE: Cadets are eligible to enroll in this course if they demonstrate officer potential, meet academic and physical prerequisites, and are accepted to a 4-year college, such as The Art Center Design College. Cadets are commissioned as 2nd Lieutenants in the Army upon successful completion of the Advance Course and upon graduation from The Art Center Design College. Military obligation varies after graduation and can be discussed with an Army ROTC enrollment advisor.
FINANCIAL AID AND TUCSON ASSISTANCE
After meeting certain requirements, cadets can apply for scholarships. Scholarships pay full tuition and $1200/yr for textbooks. Scholarship and non-scholarship cadets also receive tiered stipends. Students may also join the Army Reserve or National Guard and then participate in the Advance Course as Simultaneous Membership Program (SMP) cadets. SMPs receive tuition assistance, E5 (sergeant) pay for their weekend unit drills, and accrue time in service, which will increase their future salary and count towards retirement.
