Course Descriptions - Photography
PH100 – Introduction to Darkroom Photography
Students are introduced to the basic tools, techniques and picture-making concerns of black-and-white photography as informed by both historic and contemporary practice. Through lectures, reading, exercises and assignments, students explore creative photography using manual SLR cameras and wet darkroom facilities.
PH101 – History of Photography
This course will present a survey of the technological, aesthetic and historical developments in the medium of photography from its inception through contemporary practices. Through lecture, slides, discussion, research and field trips students will explore the multiple interpretations and facets of photography and its influence on art, media and culture throughout the 19th and 20th centuries. Prereq: GE101AH, GE105EN
PH200 – Introduction to Digital Photography
This course is an introduction to digital photography and digital imaging on a Macintosh operating system. Course emphases include digital cameras, image capture, color management, image output, and image manipulation techniques through the use of Adobe Photoshop.

PH250– Intermediate Darkroom Photography
An expansion in both depth and breadth on the technical, formal and theoretical concepts learned in previous photography courses. Students will use information gained by researching historical and contemporary practice to make several theme-based photographic projects.
Prereq: PH100, FA100, FA101
PH251 – Intermediate Digital Photography
An expansion on the technical, formal, and theoretical concepts learned in Introduction to Digital Photography. Projects and assignments will address the technical, aesthetic and creative applications of digital photography.
Prereq: PH100, PH200, FA100, FA101
PH302 – Photographic Lighting
This basic lighting course will focus on developing the ability to evaluate and control both studio and outdoor lighting. Using class projects, exercises and lectures, the course will introduce students to a wide array of standard lighting practices that are relevant to both fine art and commercial contexts. Prereq: PH250, PH251
PH303 – Color Photography
This course will focus on the use of color photography as a fine art medium, tracing its recent history from the 1970s to the present day. Students will use film and digital output to explore a variety of techniques using color as the main conceptual variable when communicating photographically.
Prereq: PH250, PH251
PH400 – Photography: Developing a Personal Vision
This course guides students through the process of identifying and honing their own photographic style. Working within both traditional and digital media, students will develop a new portfolio of images based on a semester-long proposal. The course culminates in a formal presentation of this portfolio.

PH402 – Photography and the Media
Students learn about the use and application of photography and its changing role in the media. Students will create photographs that simulate commercial assignments and realize effective communication in various forms of the media.
Prereq: all lower division PH requirements, PH250, PH251
PH403 – Alternative Process
Students will utilize experimental and/or alternative film processing and printing techniques to create dynamic photographs. Pinhole cameras and alternative cameras will be covered in the course.

PH404 – Landscape Photography
Using the genre of landscape photography as a point of reference, students will explore traditional and personal approaches to the subject. In addition to technical issues a photographer encounters with landscape photography, aesthetics, style and content will also be addressed.

PH405 – Portrait Photography
Using portraiture as a point of reference, the course is structured to expand students’ knowledge of studio and on-location photography through lectures, discussions, exercises and assignments. Technical issues that are relevant to both the commercial and fine art photographer will be addressed in addition to aesthetics, style and content.

PH406 – Photo Journalism/Documentary Photography
Through lectures, discussions, exercises and assignments, students will investigate the field of photo journalism and effective documentary photography. Topics such as location, preparation, ethics, content and the power of an image will be addressed.

PH407 – Photographic Series 390
This course provides students the opportunity to investigate a body of personal work primarily focusing on creating a series of images that are thematically linked conceptually and stylistically. The semester-long project will focus on the coherent communication of ideas, design and aesthetics in a contemporary context.

PH408 – Expanded Still Life Photography
Using the still life as a point of reference, students will explore the expressive possibilities of the still life and inanimate objects. Assignments will focus on technical issues, aesthetics, style, content and communicating ideas relevant to both the commercial and fine art photographer.

PH409 – Large Format Photography
Students will become familiar with the control and operation of the 4x5 view camera. Assignments will explore both the technical applications and creative uses of large format photography.

PH410 – Photography: Studio, Location and Photo Illustration
Through this course, students will be introduced to the process of photo illustration and its professional applications. Students will be introduced to a wide range of creative photo illustration by visiting working artists’ studios and through on-line research.

PH411 – Advanced Digital Imaging
Through lecture, discussions, exercises and assignments, the course will explore advanced digital applications as they are related to the photographic image in both a commercial and fine art context. Students will explore how the media continues to influence and shape how we see, make and perceive images.
Prereq: all lower division PH requirements, PH251
PH412 – Advanced Alternative Process
Through lecture, discussions, exercises and assignments, students will continue to explore alternative photographic processes and techniques. Self-directed projects will be structured to develop a personal approach to photography, addressing aesthetics, style and content in a contemporary context.
