Course Descriptions - Landscape Architecture
LA100 – Introduction to Landscape Architecture
This course is an introduction to the profession of landscape architecture. Lectures are related to the historical background of landscape architecture, the role of the designer and the nature and scope of current landscape architectural practice.
LA101 – History of Landscape Architecture
Landscape Architecture is the art and science of arranging functions and spaces within the ecology of the land and the culture of the humans who inhabit it. This course surveys the history of humans as it is expressed in such diverse areas as urban form, community planning, gardens, parks and recreational areas, agricultural patterns and land management.
LA200 – Landscape Design Process I
The student is introduced to the concepts, principles and processes of landscape design. There is a special emphasis on the growing understanding of interrelationships between the landscape and human decisions.
Prereq: LA100, LA101, ID101, ID105, ID104, FA100, FA101
LA202 – Landscape Planning I
This course is concerned with conceptual, scientific and design approaches to land use. It emphasizes ecological understanding and a multi-disciplinary approach to analysis, planning and design.
Prereq: LA100, LA101, ID101, ID105, ID104, FA100, FA101, GE121SC (recommended)
LA203 – Landscape Planning II
This planning design studio is designed to introduce the student to the planting and hardscape design process, its relationship to the site planning, existing site conditions, project locale and client needs.
Prereq: GE231SC
LA204 – Plant Materials I
Students learn plant identification and selection; use of plant materials in relation to soils, topography and climate; and analysis of design principles in relation to plant compositions. (Runs in Fall.) Prereq: GE231SC
LA205 – Plant Materials II
This course is a continuation of Plant Materials I with an emphasis on plant design as it relates to public and private use areas.
(Runs in Spring) Prereq: GE231SC
LA206 – Site Analysis
This course builds upon the fundamental principles of design covered in previous studios to explore a range of landscape architectural situations. Site design opportunities and constraints incorporating a mixture of cultural and environmental elements and historical topics provide a framework for students to develop their analytical skills, communication techniques and general understanding of design.
Prereq: LA203
LA300 – Planting Design for Residences
With a focus on design, Planting Design for Residences develops the student's knowledge, talents and skills in the design of landscape gardens for private residences. The students learn quality principles and fundamentals of residential site design and explore functional and artistic elements.
Prereq: LA203, LA204, LA205
LA301 – Plant Install and Management
Principles and practices for installation and management of exterior and interior landscape planting, with emphasis on woody plants. Specifications, site preparations, transplanting, growth control and diagnosis of problems.
Prereq: LA204, LA205
LA305 – Technology I
This course identifies the processes of landscape detail as a fundamental for physical production of design landscapes. The course examines the materials, form and language of detail as a means for design development.
Prereq: ID302
LA306 – Technology II
This class encourages further understanding of detailing design development and landscape construction, through literature and field research. Landscape projects within the procedure and practices of the construction industry are introduced through case studies and field trips.
Prereq: LA305
LA307 – Landscape Ecology
Landscape Ecology focuses on the landscape from an ecological perspective. The concept areas and principles of Landscape Ecology are discussed and related to Landscape Architecture through analysis, modeling, and manipulation within a conceptual framework. Theories, observations, models, and experiments pertaining to regions and their macroclimates and to landscapes and their microclimates are explored and applied through design discovery and development.
Prereq: LA203, LA204, LA205, LA206, LA305
LA308 – Landscape Design Process II
Design Process II enhances the Students "sketch" talents for communicating concepts and ideas, develops the use of analytical matrices and integrates the planning and design process of conceptual land-use planning with comprehensive master land-use planning, all based on a thorough site analysis process and culminates into a detailed site plan use based on the master planning process.
Prereq: LA200
LA309 – Urban Planning
This course expands on the concepts of urban planning introduced in LA202, including housing, transportation, land use, and sustainable urban design. Students will explore these concepts through hands-on projects, field trips, and academic research.
Prereq: LA202
LA400 – Landscape Construction I
This course covers the characteristics of landform and the effects of grading on drainage, soils and location of landscape architectural elements.
Prereq: ID302, LA301, LA306, LA307
LA401 – Landscape Construction II
Design and construction drawings for public and private landscape structures, landscape utilities and irrigation system layouts.
Prereq: LA400
LA402 – Landscape Computer Applications
This course provides a hands-on, skills-oriented overview of the computer modeling, imaging and communication applications used in landscape architectural design. The course will explore a range of advanced presentation and communication skills such as surface modeling, rendering and publishing.
Prereq: ID302
LA403 – Professional Practice
This course includes current office practices, design and construction management techniques and an introduction to legal requirements within the practice of landscape architecture.
Prereq: LA202, LA203, BE300
LA404 – Advanced Computer Application
Students in this course use computer-aided design software to develop environmental design and land planning projects.
Prereq: ID302, LA402
