Course Descriptions - Illustration
IL100 – Introduction to Illustration
This course introduces the student to the field of illustration. Students will explore the opportunities and responsibilities presented to Illustrators and learn the fundamentals of developing an illustration through research, reference material and
stylization techniques.
IL105 – Great American Illustrators
This course provides the students with the historical aspects of American Illustration. Students will also learn about early to present day Illustrators who have made significant contributions to the field of Illustration.
IL200 – Illustration Media
In this course, students utilize a wide range of illustration media and techniques. The concepts of color theory are also explored and applied to media projects.
Prereq: GD105, FA100, FA101, FA200, FA201, IL100, IL110
IL300 – Illustration Concepts
This course develops conceptual skills to be utilized with previously learned fundamentals of drawing and illustration media to create images for various formats.
Prereq: All lower division IL requirements
IL301 – Advertising Illustration
This course provides an in depth exploration into creating and producing effective illustration solutions for a variety of advertising assignments including product and advertising campaign illustrations.
Prereq: All lower division IL requirements, IL300, CP300, FA305, CP303, CP304, (FA405, FA406, or FA407 can be taken concurrently)
IL302 – Editorial/Publishing Illustration
While emphasizing stylistic and conceptual skills from previous terms, students learn how to produce creative solutions for a variety of editorial and publishing assignments including textbook, children’s books and series illustrations.
Prereq: All lower division IL requirements, IL300, CP300, FA305, CP303, CP304, (FA405, FA406, or FA407 can be taken concurrently)
IL303 – Product & Licensing Illustration
This course emphasizes producing graphically oriented illustrations to be used to create and enhance a variety of consumer products. Products include 3-dimensional illustrative design, typographic and series-oriented illustrations.
Prereq: All lower division IL requirements, IL300, CP300, FA305, CP303, CP304, (FA405, FA406, or FA407 can be taken concurrently)
IL400 – Senior Illustration Studio
Students independently develop and present a series of illustration projects. Emphasis is on research into areas of special interest to the student. The projects must meet the Illustration program’s guidelines and be presented in portfolio form to a committee of faculty members.
Prereq: All studio courses for Illustration Bachelor’s degree except Portfolio Development
IL500 – Portfolio Development
Students prepare a representative example of their best work for portfolio completion. Projects must be executed and defended using industry standards.
Prereq: All studio courses for lllustration Bachelor’s degree except Senior Illustration Studio
