LITERATURE (LT)
GE112LT – Literature
This course provides an in-depth study of selected fiction and non-fiction works of literature. Focus on how literature relates to cultural, social, political and historical issues will be stressed. Students explore all elements that distinguish works within the literary tradition. This course satisfies a Tier One: Arts/Humanities Literature credit.

GE113LT – Literature of Comic Books and the Graphic Novel
This course explores the evolution of American comics, the industry’s impact on popular culture, and its development as an art form here and in other countries from the first American comics through the contemporary graphic novel. This course satisfies a Tier One: Arts/Humanities Literature credit.

GE114LT – Introduction to Poetry
This course explores the evolution of Western poetry and its forms, the relationship of those forms to one another and their use in contemporary poetry. It also explores poetic language, its changes and its impact on the reader. This course satisfies a Tier One: Arts/Humanities Poetry credit.
GE216LT – Literary Classics
Selected readings from works traditionally considered important to the history of Western European culture, from the Renaissance to the twentieth century, will be read and discussed. This course satisfies a Tier Two: Arts/Humanities Literature credit.
GE217LT – World Literature
Students will study selected works of fiction, drama, and poetry written from multicultural perspectives. Different sections of the class emphasize different themes, genres and instructional approaches. This course satisfies a Tier Two: Arts/Humanities Literature credit or satisfies the Diversity and Global Studies requirement.

ENGLISH/COMMUNICATION (EN)
GE099EN – English/Reading Prep.
This course covers reading skills necessary for basic and advanced reading comprehension. This course is also designed to build college-level writing skills with the focus on Standard English grammar, spelling, punctuation, and general usage. Students will practice basic writing skills ranging from the single pargraph to essays of some length and complexity. All aspects of this course are designed to improve students’ essential skills for academic and professional success. This course is reserved for students accepted on a limited status basis.
GE105EN – Composition I
This course emphasizes principles and practices of writing college-level essays, gaining grammatical and stylistic proficiency as well as developing research skills and writing research papers. The development of critical and logical thinking skills is stressed. Students enroll in this class based on a writing skills placement score. This course must be taken prior to the completion of 60 credits.
GE106EN – Principles of Communication
This course teaches the technical aspects of the construction and delivery of effective speeches, presentations, debriefings, and other forms of public discourse. Also included are discussions of audience analysis and the ethics and etiquette of public speech, and examples of both current and classic speeches. This course must be taken prior to the completion of 60 credits.
GE208EN – Composition II
This course covers the process of reading comprehension and writing through the use of analytical thinking and semiotic analysis. Students enroll in this class based on a writing skills placement score. This course must be taken prior to the completion of 60 credits.

GE209EN – Critical Thinking
This course examines the process of critical thinking using a practical approach. Students will analyze and evaluate how a person develops and demonstrates responsibility for their thinking process in the classroom, in their professional life and in their personal life. The development of critical thinking skills and abilities will be encouraged through meaningful and familiar examples linked with related activities. (As part of the course objectives, students complete an assignment requiring 5 hours of volunteer service.) This course must be taken prior to the completion of 60 credits.

GE210EN – Creative Writing
This course will focus on creative writing including fiction, drama, and poetry. The study and application of forms, techniques and literary elements will be discussed. This course satisfies a Tier Two: Arts/Humanities Creative Writing credit..

GE101AH – Western Art – Paleolithic to Renaissance
Investigate a broad survey of Western art from the Paleolithic to the Renaissance by critically analyzing artists and their works within specific social and historical contexts. Various periods of art and their impact on Western civilization will be studied. This course must be taken prior to the completion of 60 credits. It is recommended students take GE101AH prior to GE102AH.
GE102AH – Western Art – Renaissance to 21st Century
Investigate a broad range of Western art from the Renaissance to the 21st century by critically analyzing artists and their works within specific social, political and historical contexts. Various periods of art and their impact on Western civilization will be studied. This course must be taken prior to the completion of 60 credits. It is recommended students take GE101AH prior to GE102AH.
GE201AH – American Art and Society
This course covers a chronological and thematically presented survey of American art from the pre-colonial to the post-modern. Through lecture, slides, discussion, research and presentations, students will critically examine artists, the work they produce and the critical writings or debates surrounding the artwork as it reflects specific social, political and historical contexts. This course satisfies a Tier One: Arts/Humanities Art History credit.

GE202AH – Survey of Non-Western Art
This course covers a broad survey of non-western art and visual culture from ancient times to the contemporary. Through lectures, slides, discussion, research and presentations, students explore major cultural and art formations of non-western and Indigenous peoples of Africa, Asia and the Pacific, within a post-colonial framework of inquiry. This course satisfies a Tier One: Arts/Humanities Art History credit or satisfies the Diversity and Global Studies requirement.

GE203AH – Hispanic and Native American Art Survey
This course is a survey of ancient, historic and contemporary Native American and Hispanic art. Through lecture, slides, discussion, research and field trips, students will learn about the social and historical context surrounding these creative expressions. The course will have an in-depth focus on the Southwest. This course satisfies a Tier One: Arts/Humanities Art History credit or the Diversity and Global Studies requirement.

GE204AH – Women, Art and Society
This course is a survey of the history of women artists including a discussion of the history of images of women and the gaze. Through lecture, slides, discussion, reading and research, students will learn about women artists and images of women in art from ancient times to the present. This course satisfies a Tier One: Arts/Humanities Art History credit or satisfies the Diversity and Global Studies requirement.

GE205AH – 20th-Century Art and Cinema
Explore the development of film and the relationship of film to 20th-century art and ideas. Technological, economic, aesthetic and socio-cultural aspects of film will be studied through screenings and readings. Students will study films in the context of modern visual culture that includes fine art, design, advertising and industry. This course satisfies a Tier One: Arts/Humanities Art History credit.

GE301AH – Prehistoric to Roman Art
Students study the art periods of Ancient Egypt, Ancient Greece and Ancient Rome as well as the Aegean and Etruscan civilizations. This course satisfies a Tier Two: Arts/Humanities Art History credit.

GE302AH – Early Christian through Pre-Renaissance
This course will enable the student, through illustrated lectures, to develop an appreciation of the cultural heritage of the Western world. Students will study early Christian and Byzantine art, the early Middle Ages, precursors of the Renaissance, Romanesque, and Gothic art. This course satisfies a Tier Two: Arts/Humanities Art History credit.

GE303AH – Renaissance to Baroque
This course introduces the student to the Renaissance, the Early Renaissance and the High Renaissance in Italy. Mannerism and the later sixteenth century in Italy, sixteenth-century painting in Northern Europe and the Baroque style will also be covered. This course satisfies a Tier Two: Arts/Humanities Art History credit.

GE304AH – Rococo to Symbolism
The histories of the early eighteenth through the nineteenth centuries are covered in this course. Topics include the Rococo style, Neoclassicism, Romanticism and late nineteenth-century developments. This course satisfies a Tier Two: Arts/Humanities Art History credit.

GE305AH – Cubism to Plus Ca Change
This course covers the precursors and developments of twentieth-century art. Students will develop an understanding of the achievements of the twentieth century that will enable them to more fully understand present art trends. This course satisfies a Tier Two: Arts/Humanities Art History credit.

GE306AH – Philosophy and Theory of Art
An overview of the major theoretical and critical positions on the visual arts from antiquity to the present time is covered in this course. Through lecture, slides, discussion, research and presentations, students will learn how prevailing theories and corresponding art practices affected each other during different historical periods. This course satisfies a Tier Two: Arts/Humanities Art History Credit.

GE401AH – Independent Research
Basic methods of art historical research are discussed and individual readings assigned, leading to selection of an appropriate thesis topic. Each student will prepare a research paper. Students must be in their senior year. This course satisfies a Tier Two: Arts/Humanities Art History credit.

Students will explore major historical events in American History and their impact on society. Topics of discussion will include technological advances, political issues, cultural and religious influences, social trends and philosophical views. By studying key brain-behavior relationships, students will identify with cultural, social and environmental influences that have an impact on interpreting the world. Psychological theories and mediating processes that influence sensation and perception, in relation to objects, self and others, will also be studied. This course satisfies a Tier One: Social and Behavioral Sciences credit.
GE126SB – Social Issues
Contemporary moral and ethical issues are explored within the cultural context of society. Students will be challenged to find their own answers to difficult contemporary issues. This course satisfies a Tier One: Social and Behavioral Sciences credit.

GE127SB – Creative Thinking
This course will focus on creativity and the learning process. The class emphasizes how students can be more creative in their area of study and use theirr Personal Learning Profile to be “Peak” learners. This course must be taken prior to the completion of 60 credits.
GE235SB – Sociology
Students will study modern industrial society from a sociological perspective. Basic problems of social order and social change as it relates to family, bureaucratic organization, class structure, culture within mass society and deviance and social control will be discussed and explored. This course satisfies a Tier One or Tier Two: Social and Behavioral Sciences credit.

This course is a study of popular culture, arts, entertainment and values. It includes an emphasis on the social and economic interactions between cultures and generations. This course satisfies a Tier One or Tier Two: Social and Behavioral Sciences credit.

GE237SB – Environmental Psychology
Students will explore the interactions and relationships between people and their environment. Topics will include how the psychological effects of stress, personal space, over crowding, environmental problems and behavioral issues affect both professional and personal actions. This course satisfies a Tier Two: Social and Behavioral Sciences credit.

GE238SB – Ethics and Social Responsibility
This class covers the theories and philosophies of ethics. Students will discuss specific ethical and moral dilemmas in relation to personal integrity and social responsibility. Topics will be taken from media headlines, and through small group discussions students will be encouraged to use critical reflection to analyze the subject matter. This course satisfies a Tier One or Tier Two: Social and Behavioral Sciences credit.

Students will explore the scientific bases and human dimensions
of abnormal psychology. The course covers the study of the features, causes and treatments of psychological disorders, as well as uses case examples to study the thinking and behavior of real people struggling with different types of psychological behaviors. Study the dynamic and complex relationships between peoples and the worlds they inhabit. An in-depth study of the human personality will provide students with insight into how the creative process works. This course covers the fundamentals and applications of arithmetic. This course is designed to develop students’ critical thinking and problem solving capabilities, as well as provide a strong foundation in algebra. This course satisfies a Tier One: Math / Science credit.
GE118MA – Financial Principles and Practices
This course introduces basic math and financial concepts. Students will also evaluate their personal financial habits and learn how to set practical measurable financial goals. This course satisfies a Tier One: Math/Science credit.
GE221MA – Universal Geometry
Students explore archetypes of nature, art and science to uncover the basic building blocks of the universe through geometry. Spatial order will be examined through the measure and relationships of forms. This course satisfies a Tier Two: Math/ Science credit.
GE222MA – Trigonometry
This course deals with trigonometry from an analytical approach. Topics include relations and functions in general, the trigonometric functions and their inverses, graphs, solutions of triangles, vectors, trigonometric identities and equations and applied problems. This course satisfies a Tier Two: Math/Science credit.

GE223MA – Data Interpretation
An overview of data analysis using rational, logic and basic statistics with emphasis on probability laws, sampling distributions and parameters associated with a single population. This course satisfies a Tier Two: Math/Science credit.

This course provides an overview of the stars, our galaxy, black holes and basic principles of star formation. Students will also examine topics such as the age of the universe, how the moon was formed and current day discoveries. This course satisfies a Tier One: Math/Science credit.

This course explores the interdependence between organisms and their environment. The effects of humans on ecosystems, population and pollution are covered through research and field work. This course satisfies a Tier One: Math/Science credit.

This course is designed to give students a firm understanding of the skeleton as an architectural framework for the human body and of the muscular system as a system for the production of motion. GE231SC – Botany (Plant Structure & Function - LA102)
This course shows students why plants are a fascinating and essential part of their everyday lives. It focuses on four major themes: plants and people, conservation, biology, evolution and biotechnology. The relationship between plants and people is highlighted throughout the course. GE226PL – Introduction to Philosophy
